Garrison Scott Earned the Highest Honor in Scouting

by W. H. Killroy

Garrison Scott of Jenks BSA Troop 214 earned the highest honor in Scouting Saturday afternoon. The Eagle Scout Award was presented in an Eagle Court of Honor, at St. James Presbyterian Church in Jenks and the St. James Pastor, Jane Huffstetler gave a moving invocation just prior to the ceremony. Members of the Honor Guard made up of the Scouts of Troop 214, opened the Eagle Court of Honor with a flag ceremony. From a hidden area, the Voice of the Eagle explained the journey on the road to Eagle, taken by the fourteen year old Scout.

The impressive array of speakers started with the KMRG morning show host, Joe Kelly.
In a moving speech, Mr. Kelly, an Eagle Scout himself, spoke of the honored bond between Eagle Scouts, and the impact the Eagle Scout experience had on his life. “Garrison is my friend and I’m honored to be able to be a part of his Eagle Court of Honor,” Said Kelly.

Iran Test Fires Russian Missiles in Strait of Hormuz

News Max

TEHRAN, Iran -- Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards test fired its new Russian defense missile system Wednesday near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, state radio reported.

The two-day maneuvers are Iran's second since the United Nations Security Council approved economic sanctions against it Dec. 23, which ban selling to Iran materials and technology that it could use in its nuclear and missile programs.

As tensions rise over Iran's nuclear standoff with the West, the United States and Iran have pursued an escalating series of military moves, with Washington sending a second aircraft carrier battle group to the region and Iran responding with more frequent maneuvers.

The Revolutionary Guards' began the games Wednesday in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, which flank the strait, through which some 20 percent of the world's oil transits daily.

The goal of the maneuvers, dubbed Saegheh and Badr, is to improve the "defense, stamina and operation" of participating units, state radio reported. The first word of the games' name means lightening, while the second refers to a decisive battle in the early days of Islam.

The Revolutionary Guards is an elite military corps with more than 200,000 members and its own naval and air forces. It is independent of the regular armed forces and controlled directly by the supreme leader. It oversees vital interests such as oil and natural gas installations and the nation's missile arsenal.

Iran announced in January that it had received the Tor M-1 Russian air defense missile system, though it did not say when the weapons had arrived. Moscow had said previously it would supply 29 of the systems to Iran under a $700 million contract signed in December 2005.

Iran in January launched a three-day military maneuvers, including short-range missile tests on its mainland.

The United States and several of its Western allies believe that Iran is using the nuclear program to produce an atomic weapon — charges Iran denies, saying its aim is to generate electricity.

North Korea: Nuclear Test Successful

News Max

North Korea faced a barrage of condemnation and calls for retaliation Monday after it announced that it had set off a small atomic weapon underground, a test that thrust the secretive communist state into the elite club of nuclear-armed nations.

The United States, Japan, China and Britain led a chorus of criticism and urged action by the United Nations Security Council in response to the reported test, which fell one day after the anniversary of reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's accession to power nine years ago.

The Security Council had warned North Korea just two days earlier not to go through with any test, and the Pyongyang government's defiance was likely to lead to calls for stronger sanctions against the impoverished and already isolated country.

White House spokesman Tony Snow called for "immediate actions to respond to this unprovoked act" and said that the United States was closely monitoring the situation and "reaffirms its commitment to protect and defend our allies in the region."

South Korea's geological institute estimated that the test's power was equivalent to 550 tons of TNT, far smaller than the two nuclear bombs the U.S. dropped on Japan in World War II.

The U.S. Geological Survey said it recorded a magnitude-4.2 seismic event in northeastern North Korea. Asian neighbors also said they registered a seismic event, but only Russia said its monitoring services had detected a nuclear explosion.

SIERRA VISTA, Arizona — A 39-year-old man died after a swarm of bees attacked him and his father, according to a media report Monday.

The two men were working on a roof Sunday when they accidentally disturbed a bee hive. While the father sought refuge inside the house, the son stayed outside to try to ward off the bees, Carol Capas, spokeswoman for the Cochise County Sheriff's Department, told the Sierra Vista Herald.

The son was stung about 300 times. The father was stable in stable condition at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center Sunday afternoon after being stung 100 times, Capas said.

Sheriff's deputies and firefighters used foam to calm the bees. Two emergency workers were stung, but were in good condition, Capas told the newspaper.

Sullivan Votes to Protect Traditional Marriage

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Sullivan voted in favor of H.J. Res. 88, The Marriage Protection Amendment – a Constitutional amendment defining marriage in America as the union of a man and a woman. The amendment received majority support in the House, but did not reach the two-thirds majority required to pass. Today’s vote represents an increase of nine votes from the last time it was considered in the House.

“Today’s vote shows that members of Congress from both parties recognize the importance of preserving our nation’s tradition of marriage. Overwhelming evidence shows that a union between a man and a woman is by far the best environment for raising children. Children who are raised in a traditional intact family by a mother and father are healthier, more successful, and have better life outcomes than those who do not.

“Too many activist federal judges are legislating from the bench and are redefining the traditional role of marriage. It is vital that judges do their jobs, and allow state legislatures to legislate, so as to maintain the careful balance between state and federal rights. The Marriage Protection Amendment ensures that the democratic process at the state level will decide the allocation of the benefits and privileges traditionally associated with marriage, not unelected judges.”

Sullivan Applauds Capture and Deportation of Criminal Illegal Aliens

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman John Sullivan released the following statement regarding the arrest and deportation of 127 criminal illegal aliens from Tulsa and Oklahoma City in the past week as a part of the Department of Homeland Security’s “Operation Return to Sender”:

“Since elected to Congress, I have tirelessly worked to draw attention to the immigration crisis occurring in Eastern Oklahoma and throughout our entire nation. The 46 arrests made last Wednesday in Tulsa are an important step forward in dealing with the criminal illegal alien population in Eastern Oklahoma. I would like to thank the hardworking local law enforcement who assisted the officers and agents from ICE’s Offices in Oklahoma City and Dallas to successfully carry out this mission. Enforcement of our interior immigration laws is a critical step toward getting a handle on the illegal immigration crisis facing the U.S.”

Al Gore's Convenient Lie:
The Global Warming Spin

The global warming controversy has been heating up as the media issues dire warnings about the planet's future.

Riding the media heat wave, Al Gore recently released his documentary "An Inconvenient Truth."

Despite plaudits from the major media, NewsMax Magazine finds that the film, in fact, offers some "convenient lies."

In the July edition, you'll find out if all the talk about global warming points to a legitimate threat - or if it's a lot of hot air.

NewsMax Magazine's special report "Al Gore Spins Global Warming" debunks many widely promulgated notions about the global warming threat and finds that truth is the first casualty in Gore's apocalyptic film.

The compelling report by Lowell Ponte - author of the best-selling book about changing climate, "The Cooling" - and Marc Morano details the propaganda blitz about global warming … and the facts it obscures.

The "Global Warming" edition of NewsMax Magazine is already on newsstands across the country (including many Barnes & Noble, Hastings, Follett, and other major bookstores).

Mexican Aliens

'Stolen'Land

Poncho Via and Friend

THE WASHINGTON TIMES

DENVER -- La reconquista, a radical movement calling for Mexico to "reconquer" America's Southwest, has stepped out of the shadows at recent immigration-reform protests nationwide as marchers held signs saying, "Uncle Sam Stole Our Land!" and waved Mexico's flag.
Even as organizers urged marchers to display U.S. flags, the theme of reclaiming "stolen" land remained strong. One popular banner read: "If you think I'm illegal because I'm a Mexican, learn the true history because I'm in my homeland."
"We need to change direction," said Jose Lugo, an instructor in Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder at a campus march last week. "And by allowing these 50,000, 50 million [immigrants] to come in here, we can do that."
The revolutionary tone has surprised even longtime immigration watchers such as Ira Mehlman, the Los Angeles-based spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform.
"I've always been skeptical myself about this [reconquista], but what I've seen over the last few weeks leads me to believe that there's more there than I thought," Mr. Mehlman said.
"You're seeing people marching with Mexican flags chanting, 'This is our country.' I don't think that we can dismiss this as youthful exuberance or a bunch of hotheads," he said.
Hispanic rights leaders insist there's nothing to the so-called reconquista, sometimes referred to as Aztlan, the mythical ancestral homeland of the Aztecs that reportedly stretches from the border to southern Oregon and Colorado.
Nativo Lopez, president of the Mexican American Political Association in Los Angeles, one of the march organizers, was infuriated when a reporter asked him about the reconquista.
"I can't believe you're bothering me with questions about this. You're not serious," Mr. Lopez said. "I can't believe you're bothering with such a minuscule, fringe element that has no resonance with this populous."
At the same time, some analysts say the seismic demographic shifts brought on by unchecked border crossings and birth rates are resulting in a de facto reconquista.
"Demographically, socially and culturally, the reconquista of the Southwest United States by Mexico is well under way," Harvard University professor Samuel P. Huntington said in 2004.
"No other immigrant group in U.S. history has asserted or could assert a historical claim to U.S. territory. Mexicans and Mexican-Americans can and do make that claim," he said.

Sullivan Finds Revelations Concerning Immigration Benefits Agency Troubling: USCIS Must Be Fixed

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sullivan sent letters to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dennis Hastert, and to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, stating his “grave concerns” regarding U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ (USCIS) ability to properly process the millions of immigration applications they receive every year and their ability to handle the processing of 12-20 million immigration applications that a massive amnesty or guestworker program could entail. 16 members of the House Immigration Reform Caucus joined Sullivan in voicing these concerns.

“Illegal immigration is one of the most pressing issues facing our country today,” Sullivan said. “USCIS’s current deficiencies create dangerous loopholes, which could allow potential terrorists to enter our country, undetected by the very authorities who have been put in place to protect the U.S. from terrorists. The fact that USCIS will not have a fraud-management system in place until ten years after the attacks of September 11, 2001 is absolutely unacceptable.”

A March 2006 Government Accountability Office (GAO) report indicated that many USCIS immigration employees do not have access to important law enforcement and national security databases, including terrorism watch lists, because the federal government has failed to complete required background checks on employees of the agency. The GAO report also gives numerous instances of fraud within USCIS and states that the agency does not do enough to deter it and will not have a fraud-management system in place until 2011. The former Director of the Office of Security and Investigations at USCIS cites 500 different allegations of criminal misconduct against agency employees, which have gone unresolved because the agency has only seven investigators to handle these allegations.

In addition, GAO cited a study which found that of the 94 terrorists known to operate in the U.S. between the early 1990s and 2004, including the September 11th hijackers, 59 of them committed immigration fraud and were still approved by USCIS.

“It is vital that we halt any consideration of enacting into law an amnesty or guestworker program until these charges of misconduct are fully investigated and a fraud-management system is fully implemented. Our national security is at stake if USCIS does not reform their security practices,” Sullivan said. “The allegations of misconduct and fraud at USCIS only further highlight the need to pass enforcement first legislation, and defer consideration of any guestworker program or amnesty of any kind.”

Tougher Crackdown on Illegal Immigration

Denying Benef

NewsMax.com

Americans support building a security fence along the entire 2,000 mile U.S.- Mexican border by a landslide, a new Time magazine poll has found.

By a margin of 56 to 40 percent, respondents said they want the wall built from sea to shining sea - not just the 700 miles stipulated in the House plan, a proposal the press calls "draconian."

In more evidence that the American people want a tougher crackdown on illegal immigration than anything favored by Congress or the media, 62 percent told Time that they favored using the military to guard the border. Just 35 percent opposed.

But the poll's biggest shocker may be on the question of deporting illegals back to their native country, an option that politicians and the press say is out of the question.

Time found, however, that 47 percent of those surveyed actually favor deporting "all illegal immigrants." 49 percent were opposed.
And 51 percent said the U.S. would be "better of" if all illegals were deported and the border sealed to prevent any more from coming in. Just 38 percent disagreed.

A full 75 percent say illegals should be denied government supplied healthcare and food stamps, with 21 percent saying they should get those benefits. 69 percent say illegals shouldn't be allowed to get U.S. drivers licenses.

Time surveyed 1004 adult Americans on March 29 and 30. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 3 percent

Federal Court Uphold President's Authority

News Max

A federal appeals court Thursday upheld the president's authority to regulate financial transactions with foreign countries during a security crisis and rejected a challenge by a man prosecuted for sending $100,000 into Iraq.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the first President Bush made proper use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act after Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990.

The court rejected a claim that invoking the act unfairly let the president create new criminal offenses that should only be authorized by Congress.

In an opinion explaining their decision, the judges said Congress has the authority to delegate some of its power to the president, especially in matters of foreign affairs, and noted that in a similar case, the Supreme Court upheld the president's power to criminalize the sale of weapons to certain countries.

Sullivan’s

Fatherhood

Legislation

Unanimously

Passed

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman John Sullivan’s resolution promoting marriage and honoring fathers passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 407-0. Congressman Sullivan is the co-chairman of the Congressional Fatherhood Caucus and a proud father.

“As we anticipate the celebration of Father’s Day this weekend, I am proud to have introduced H. Res. 318 which supports responsible fatherhood, promotes marriage, and encourages greater involvement by fathers in the lives of their children,” said Sullivan. “Being a father is one of the greatest blessings in my life. I love my job, but I look forward to the end of the week when I can head back home to Tulsa and to my family.”

The resolution calls on fathers across the nation to use Father’s Day to reconnect and rededicate themselves to their children’s lives. Findings by the National Fatherhood Initiative show that the closer adolescents feel to their fathers, regardless of the type of family structure in which they live, the less likely it is that they will engage in the use of drugs or in delinquent behavior.

“Involved and proactive fathers help to shape confident and productive future citizens,” said Sullivan. “I introduced this resolution not only to honor fathers, but to call attention to the importance of the job. The role that fathers play in the development of their children cannot be understated. So as we honor fathers on Father’s Day, we should also encourage men to evaluate their own participation in their children’s lives, because you can never be too involved.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sullivan, along with several Members of the House, held a press conference this afternoon highlighting the deficiencies in the Senate bill.

“The Senate’s legislation, S. 2611, is a dangerous expansion of our immigration laws and it would be the largest expansion of the welfare state in 35 years,” Sullivan said. “Studies show that it will provide for approximately 103 million immigrants to come to the U.S. – legally – over the next 20 years. That is one-third of the current U.S. population. We must not allow this dangerous influx in immigration to occur.”

Congressman Sullivan, along with Representatives Tom Tancredo, Steve King, Dana Rohrabacher, Virgil Goode, Patrick McHenry, Ernest Istook and Ginny Brown-Waite, and members of the newly formed organization, “You Don’t Speak For Me,” a group of recent legal immigrants and Hispanic Americans who are opposed to giving amnesty to those who are here illegally, discussed their concerns about the Senate’s immigration reform legislation, which includes amnesty for the 12 to 20 million illegal aliens in the U.S. They emphasized the need for enforcement of our border and interior immigration laws first, before an amnesty or guestworker program is considered. “Border security is a vital step in ensuring national security.”

In addition, Congressman Sullivan and several Members of the House sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, expressing their concerns with the proposed Senate immigration legislation. The letter, signed by 29 House Members, draws attention to a recent Zogby poll which found that Americans prefer, by a two to one margin, the House of Representatives’ enforcement-only bill to several pending bills in the Senate that grant amnesty to millions of illegal aliens.

“In light of strong voter attitudes against the Senate approach toward immigration reform, the time has come for the Senate to act on comprehensive immigration enforcement legislation and reject calls to grant amnesty for an estimated 12 to 20 million illegal aliens currently in the U.S.,” Sullivan said. “Our country desperately needs secure borders and a comprehensive immigration enforcement plan.”

Garrison Sends 1st E-mail Home

03/23/07 Friday Shenyang from Garrison Scott

Dad,

I'm sorry for the late letter, but I sent it as soon as I could. I am e-mailing you from Shenyang, at my exchange student's house. I wish that you could have been here. I just got back from school and started looking at my website. It's looking great. I've been tired in the past days shopping for you guys and I already purchased Mom's, Erin's, one set of chopsticks, a hat for me, and your gift.

If I'm calculating correctly, you should receive this e-mail at about 6:00 A.M. So, that being the case, good morning Jenks America! I have been having so much fun and I wish that you were here to enjoy it as well. In a Shenyang morning, I wake up, say a prayer, hang up my coat so that I can see the American Flag and say the Pledge of Allegiance.

Upon arriving here, I got sick. Maybe it was the culture shock or just the pure smell of fresh pollution, but one thing is for sure, as much as I do love it here, I can't wait to breathe in my next breath of American fresh air. I can't wait to see all of you. I miss you all very much.

International Incident at Beijing Airport China

The Nun-chuck Incident

by W. H. Killroy

In the afternoon of March 22nd Garrison Scott was detained at the Beijing Airport Police for carrying concealed weapons in his Carry on luggage while attempting to board a flight to Shenyang China.

According to Mrs Ellen Lannert, who was traveling with the young Martial Artist: "As we went through security, Garrison was pulled aside and his backpack was searched" "Apparently the set of nun-chucks that he purchased at the Kung fu show were packed in his backpack and not in his checked baggage."

Nun-chucks are considered weapons, and are not allowed to be carried on an aircraft anywhere, as far as this writer knows.

Lannert, in an E-mail sent on Thursday said, "They escorted him (Garrison) to a security area, took down his name and passport number and then they were going to send him back out to check the nun-chucks and go through security again!" "He decided to donate his nun-chucks to the Beijing International airport."

Last Day in Beijing

03/22/07 Wednesday Beijing/Shenyang from Mrs Lannert: Ni Hao

Apparently my update on our last day in Beijing and our arrival did not
make it. That darn Chinese internet. I have to use a mail proxy to send these messages and we had a hard time just getting to the web site. After I hit send, Chinese popped up!

Anyway, we started our last day in Beijing going to a Hutong. It is a
section of the city with courtyard homes that have been in the families for many years. It is very
traditional. We toured the Hutong on pedicabs, much like rickshaws. The kids got a kick out of it. We passed asign with pictures of dogs on it and Jakob started making jokes about dinner and he was having half Pekinese and half chow with cheese!

We were taken to a home and shown how the house is really separate rooms
and buildings connected by the courtyard, which is no wider than a sidewalk. From there
we walked to the drum tower. It is another set of very steep stairs. Christine counted them and
remarked that there were 69! At the top of the Drum tower the students were lucky enough to catch atraditional drum ceremony.

As we went through security, Garrison was pulled aside and his backpack searched. Apparently

They escorted him to a security area, took down his name and passport number and then they were going to send him back out to check the numchucks and go through security again! He decided to donate his numchucks to the Beijing International airport. We all could not stop laughing, including
Garrison. At least every five minutes someone would bring up the numchucks and we would all start laughing.

We found out that our flight had been delayed due to snow in Shenyang that
morning! We camped out by the gate and the kids did a great job of amusing themselves. A
Chinese man came over and tried to have a conversation with the students. It was apparent there was a definite language barrier. He would write in characters and the kids would just look at them confused. They were all pulling out their translation books, but it didn't help mush. It did help to pass an hour at the airport! After a two hour delay we were on our way to Shenyang.

What a greeting! They had banners and flowers and tons of people to greet
us. We were then loaded onto a tourist bus (greyhound type) that just happened to be owned
by Sui's (Christine's buddy) father. We were off to the school so the students could get their
uniforms. When we arrived at school and went to the conference room there were more flowers, banners from the students and the banners we had up at our school. The uniforms, notebooks, pen, penciland ID were set out on the table for the students. They were all checked that the uniforms fit and off they went for their first night with their families. Tiffany was definitely overwhelmed. I have never seen her so quiet. The girls with two buddies will be split five days with one family and five days with the other family. I wish we had known that before we left Tulsa! Anyway, from my last email you can see that they really did well. Emily wanted me to tell Parker Happy Birthday and Joey wanted to send a Happy Birthday to Johnny(late now
but on time when I first sent it!).

03/22/07 Shenyang: E-mail from Joey Copp

I just thought I'd let you all know that we heard from Joey after he arrived in Shenyang. It was a comically short email which was signed "Joey Copp" - lest we confuse him with some other Joey in China! He was with his "buddy" Huang, and I'm assuming he didn't want to spend much time on the computer. Can't wait to see those photos from Mrs. Lannert.

Coach Weis & Ellen Lannert Wednesday Beijing from Mrs Lannert:Ni Hao!
Day two started 03/21/07terday, but very overcast. By 11, the

Our first trip was to the Jade Factory. We learned how to tell grade A from grade B jade. We watched the process of how the jade is etched.

You could tell that the kids were tired today. No one really seemed to get into any of it. They were pretty good shoppers. I had warned them that the jade would be very expensive in this shop, so they
refrained from purchasing any.

From the jade factory, we headed to Ming’s Tomb. They were all sofascinated by the trees growing out of the side
of the wall. We entered the tomb and proceeded down the many flights of stairs. Christine decided there were so many she was going to count them on the way out.

During the tour, I tried to get pictures of the various students. Tiffany is the hardest! She doesn’t mind if you take a
picture of her with her camera, but not with any one else’s! I have now dubbed her the Mona Lisa since she won’t give me a full smile when I take her picture!

On to the Cloisonné shop and lunch. This is my favorite place! The amount of precision that goes into making each piece is really incredible. All the kids found it really interesting.
Dakota just couldn’t believe what they could do with copper.

Lunch proved to be very interesting. This was our fish lunch and a fried, entire fish was brought to the table. Stuart and Tiffany had made an agreement with each other that they would eat the fish eyes. Emily and Christine have some great video of Tiffany’s reaction. Garrison has volunteered to now eat the next fish eye that arrives!

With lunch and shopping over, we went on to the Great Wall.It had snowed the day beforeand today it was really foggy. The students could not see the wall up on the mountains as we drove
to Badaling. I felt bad because it is such a neat view.

Once at the wall, we took the group shot in the fog. You can just barely make out the wall in the background. We then broke up with the boys running ahead with Coach. Kelsey and Christine decided that they were going to take care of this old teacher! I didn’t think that it was possible, but the section we went up was even steeper than last
year! I wimped out! We met up with Tiffany and Garrison, so Christine, Kelsey, Garrison and Tiffany continued. They went to the next watchtower and then returned to the old wimp! Kelsey
and Garrison were done, but Christine and Tiffany decided to go back and complete the wall. The three of us wentto the gate. I enjoyed this part because
I had a chance to get to know Kelsey and Garrison even better. Very neat kids!

The rest of the group made it to the end of the wall section. Quite a feat! Emily was really proud of herself. Of course she said later that she thought her legs would hurt, but that the outsides of her feet hurt the most!

Tiffany Yates

Coach Weis has earned the name the Negotiator. He has me beat by a longway. He talked them down to a dollar
for baseball caps! Dakota, Stuart, Jakob, and Garrison have decided to only shop when he is with them! He did such a great job, that as we were leaving and on the bus the vendors came. He had about ten of them trying to sell stuff and he got a few more caps for a dollar along with some more Russian hats much cheaper than I dealt yesterday.

We returned to the hotel and walked up the street to dinner. Joey definitely has issues with chopsticks! He dropped them at lunch and again at dinner. He at least caught his dinner set
before they hit the ground! No one was very hungry and after just two days they are already sick of Chinese food. They
still have 11 days more of it!

Travel has caught up with Christine. I walked her back to the hotel as Coach Weis took the others to shop and look
at the street food vendors after dinner. They are out with him as I write this and Christine is tucked in bed, already asleep.
Tomorrow is the traditional Hutong, Bell Tower with tea ceremony and then
off to Shenyang. They will finally meet their Chinese buddy, and for the girls, find out which one they will bewith!

I tried sending pictures last night with no luck. The internet connection at the hotel in Shenyang is much faster than
the one here, so I will post all of the pictures on Kodak Gallery tomorrow night.

Until then, Zai Chian!

Monday Beijing from Mrs Lannert: Today was a very long and cold day. It was over-cast and breezy the entire day. Most did not bundle up as well as we suggested.

The first stop was Tiannamen Square and the Forbidden City. By the time we left, Joey's hands were bright red, along with his ears! He did manage to thaw out at lunch.

Following the Forbidden City, we went to the Lama Temple and saw the 18 meter Buddha made of a single Sandlewood tree. As we were leaving, Stuart, Garrison and Jakob
wanted Russian winter hats. The kiosk wanted 180rmb (about $23.00). The boys called me over and learned something about bargaining. We talked them done to 45rmb, (about $6.00). Stuart thought that was the greatest feat!

Lunch was....Chinese! They all seemed to enjoy lunch. Stuart is our steamed white rice king. He
can't get enough. Christine is the tea Queen. Her face just lit up after the first sip of Jasmine.

I got to sit next to Emily and found her Chinese not only excellent, but how well she is handling being away
from home. She said it was the first night that she had not talked to her Mom, but she was great. I'll make sure to keep a close eye on her as the days pass.

Kelsey had a ton of fun watching all of us try to eat with chop-sticks. I have dubbed her my humor girl (but haven't told her that yet). She is just so happy all of the time and can find the simplest of things funny.

On to the Temple of Heaven, which was even colder. From there we went to the pearl market where Tiffany made a very good deal on a necklace. We went down to the second floor of "designer" purses, where Christine learned
that it really is okay to
say no and walk away. She ended up making a steal, thanks to some help from our tour guide, on a purse.

Dinner was Peking duck. Most of the kids ate it except for Joey, Garrison and Tiffany.Joey was having issues with the
chopsticks, dropped them on the floor and not 5 seconds later dropped his fork on the floor.

On to the Kong Fu show where Stuart fell asleep! The rest stayed awake for most of it and really thought it was cool. Dakota really was watching out
for those that aren't watching
for themselves.

Tomorrow the China Wall.

Update from Mrs Lannert, Beijing: What an adventure. The flight from Denver to San Francisco was delayed for 1 1/2 hours. This meant the students would miss their connection to Beijjing. The
kids were so great. Mrs Lannert had to stand in line and try to make arrangements. United told them to get on the Denver flight and booked the group out of San Francisco to Beijing on Sunday. That meant they would have had to stay in San Francisco
for the evening.

Garrison catches a few winks while in Shanghai

Once we landed in San Francisco, they put all of the Beijing passangers on the Shanghai flight. " We literally had to run to the gate," said Mrs Lannert.

The kids did well on the long flight. It was not as nice a plane as they had expected, but the meal service was very good.
"Most of the stucents tried to sleep some, except for Garrison," said Mrs Lannert. "He seemed to be our sentry, and no matter how many times I told him he should try and sleep, he didn't."

When they arrived in Shanghai, they had a four hour layover. Mrs Lannert went to about
every ticket counter
until she found the correct China Eastern counter for check in. Once at the gate, all but Kelsey passed out.

TRY IT

IN

MEXICO!

I found this in an E-mail the other day. It's so true!

Enter Mexico illegally. Never mind immigration quotas, visas, international law, or any of that nonsense.

Once there, demand that the local government provide free medical care for you and your entire family.

Demand bilingual nurses and doctors. Than demand free bilingual local government forms, bulletins, etc. Procreate abundantly.

Deflect any criticism of this allegedly irresponsible reproductive behavior with, "It is a cultural USA thing. You would not understand, pal."

Keep your American identity strong. Fly Old Glory from your rooftop, or proudly display it in your front window or on your car bumper.

Speak only English at home and in public and insist that your children do likewise.

Demand classes on American culture in the Mexican school system.

Demand a local Mexican driver license. This will afford other legal rights and will go far to legitimize your unauthorized, illegal presence in Mexico. Than drive around with no liability insurance and ignore local traffic laws.

Insist that the local Mexican law enforcement teach English to all it's officers.

Good luck! You'll be demanding for the rest of time or until you are dead, because it will never happen. It will not happen in Mexico or any other country in the world except right here in the United States, Land of the naive and stupid, idiotic, politically correct poin Mexico or Iraq.

2/16/07

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman John Sullivan spoke on the House floor in opposition to H. Con. Res. 63, the Iraq war resolution. His remarks can be found below:

“Mr. Speaker:

I rise today in strong opposition to H. Con. Res. 63 It is impossible, despite what the Democrat’s have claimed, to both support the troops and not support the increase in troops necessary to win this war. With this nonbinding resolution, Democrats maintain they support the troops, but at the same time disapprove of their mission. This confusing message simply lends encouragement to the Iraqi insurgents and terrorists to believe that every
roadside bomb brings them closer to their goal of a
terrorist state in the heart of the Middle East.

The simple fact is the deployment of troops to secure
Baghdad has already begun. In fact, soldiers of the 82nd
Airborne Division, who were deployed after President Bush’s call for a temporary increase in troops, are already in Iraq doing critical work with the Iraqi
Security Forces. The passage of this misguided resolution
does nothing except demoralize these brave men and women
in uniform and invigorate those who wish Americans harm.

The consequences of failure in Iraq could not be greater.
The outcome in Iraq will directly affect America’s efforts in the Global War on Terror for generations. A victory for
the Islamic militants, such as the al-Qaeda members who are embedded in the al-Anbar province of Iraq and the
Iranians in Iraq who are provoking sectarian violence,
would embolden the enemy to expand the reach of their
efforts. Retreat would result in instability in the region, encourage radical Islamic terrorists and rogue regimes to expand into the region and give terrorists a sanctuary from which to launch attacks against the U.S. and the West.

The bipartisan Iraq Study Group recognized the need of a troop surge to secure Iraq. To this end, I ask unanimous consent to submit pages 27-29 and page 73 of the Iraq Study Group report for the record on this issue and to highlight the grave humanitarian consequences of a
withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq. I am tired of hearing
Democrats constantly criticizing our plans for Iraq, yet they do not have a plan of their own. It is a shame that they have chosen to play politics with our men and women in uniform.

Democrats now have the responsibility to govern, but they lack both a plan for success in Iraq and the political
will to advance a bill that cuts off funding for the troops. They say that the problems in Iraq can only be solved by a political solution. While this is true to some extent, you cannot solve the problems of Iraq
diplomatically and politically without first providing security to the Iraqi people. Security must go hand in hand with a political solution. Democrats need to understand that their political choices and rhetoric hurt our troops morale and give comfort to the enemy.

We all agree that it is time for the Iraqi’s to step forward, end the sectarian violence and build a responsible government. Iraqi Prime Minister al-Maliki has
promised the American people that in this new campaign,
Iraqi troops will be the ones knocking down doors, arresting insurgents, and patrolling the streets, with U.S. troops in a supporting role. We cannot give up at a critical point in Iraq’s fledgling democracy.

Failure in Iraq is not an option. If we do not win in Iraq, we leave it up to future generations to tackle the problems of Islamic terrorism in this unstable region.
There is no short term solution in Iraq because it is not a short term problem.

Today, our brave men and women in Iraq are rising to the
challenge to secure Baghdad from a vicious enemy, risking
their lives for their country and our national security. The message the Democrats send with this resolution as we
commit our forces to battle is a vote declaring their inevitable defeat.

I encourage all my colleagues to vote NO on this misguided and ill-timed resolution. I yield back the balance of my time.”

Sullivan Votes Against Expanding Embryonic Stem Cell
Research

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman John Sullivan voted against H.R. 3, the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. This unfortunate legislation expands embryonic stem cell
research by using taxpayer dollars to support and
encourage the destruction of human embryos for scientific
research.

“I believe that life begins at conception and that the
destruction of human embryos through embryonic stem cell
research violates the rights of the unborn,” Sullivan
said. “The science behind embryonic stem cell research is
inconclusive. It is not fair to the American taxpayer to
stick them with the bill, which H.R. 3 does, when there
are alternatives to this research that have shown as much
promise.”

Little evidence shows that embryonic stem cells can be
used successfully in medical treatment. On the contrary,
adult stem cells are already being used to treat over 65
different diseases and conditions, including spinal cord
injuries, diabetes, and heart disease.

In addition, many new developments have occurred in the
area of stem cell research, including the recent news that
stem cell research using cells from amniotic fluid may be
highly successful. These stem cells can be used for
cutting edge research into diseases, such as Parkinson’s
and Alzheimer’s. “Amniotic stem cell research holds much
of the same promise as embryonic research, without the
destruction of human embryos.”

“With all the advancements in non-embryonic stem cell
research and their inconsistent record on the issue, it is
disappointing that House Democrats insist on pushing this
issue, which raises serious ethical problems,” Sullivan
said. “I will continue to support common sense stem cell
research, which focuses on curing diseases, not destroying
human life.”

I think that teens nearing voting age, must start to pay attention to our nations issues, to better prepare them selves in becoming informed voters.

It is my intent to inform teens of Local, National and World News and about Congressman John Sullivan and what he stands for, how he frames the issues of our times, and how he plans to deal with them. Of course, I’ll be telling you what I think, from the teens point of view. When I do, remember that you

December 7th 1941

Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Sunday

Saturday, December 6 - Washington D.C. - U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt makes a final appeal to the Emperor of Japan for peace.

Sunday, December 7 - Islands of Hawaii, near Oahu - The Japanese attack force under the command of Admiral Nagumo, consisting of six carriers with 423 planes, is about to attack.

Pearl Harbor - At 7:02 a.m., two Army operators at Oahu's northern shore radar station detect the Japanese air attack approaching and contact a junior officer who disregards their reports, thinking they are American B-17 planes which are expected in from the U.S. west coast.

Near Oahu - At 7:15 a.m., a second attack wave of 167 planes takes off from the Japanese carriers and heads for Pearl Harbor.

Pearl Harbor is not on a state on high alert. Senior commanders have concluded, based on available intelligence, there is no reason to believe an attack is imminent.

At 7:53 a.m., the first Japanese assault wave, with 51 'Val' dive bombers, 40 'Kate' torpedo bombers, 50 high level bombers and 43 'Zero' fighters, commences the attack with flight commander, Mitsuo Fuchida, sounding the battle cry: "Tora! Tora! Tora!" (Tiger! Tiger! Tiger!).

The Americans are taken completely by surprise.

Escaping damage from the attack are the prime targets, the three U.S. Pacific Fleet aircraft carriers, Lexington, Enterprise and Saratoga, which were not in the port. Also escaping damage are the base fuel tanks.

The casualty list includes 2,335 servicemen and 68 civilians killed, with 1,178 wounded. Included are 1,104 men aboard the Battleship USS Arizona killed after a 1,760-pound air bomb penetrated into the forward magazine causing catastrophic explosions

In Washington, various delays prevent the Japanese diplomats from presenting their war message to Secretary of State, Cordell Hull, until 2:30 p.m.

News of the "sneak attack" is broadcast to the American public via radio bulletins, with many popular Sunday afternoon entertainment programs being interrupted.

Monday, December 8 - The United States and Britain declare war on Japan with President Roosevelt calling December 7, "a date which will live in infamy..."

Thursday, December 11 - Germany and Italy declare war on the United States. The European and Southeast Asian wars have now become a global conflict with the Axis powers; Japan, Germany and Italy, united against America, Britain, France, and their Allies.

Wednesday, December 17 - Admiral Chester W. Nimitz becomes the new commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

Both senior commanders at Pearl Harbor; Navy Admiral Husband E. Kimmel, and Army Lt. General Walter C. Short, were relieved of their duties following the attack. Subsequent investigations will fault the men for failing to adopt adequate defense measures

“For too long, the vast majority of the public has been frustrated, watching helplessly as their federal government fails to enforce the immigration laws already on the books or to control our borders,” said the Congressman. “Simply put, interior security is national security. In my district, residents complain as truckloads of illegal aliens are released into their neighborhoods rather than being detained. Border towns are not the only areas affected, as illegal aliens are constantly finding new areas in the interior of our country to reside.”

Congressman Sullivan described how “the federal government will have a choice between taking immediate custody of illegal or criminal aliens, or paying for their continued local detention.”

Sullivan said “no longer will it be an option to put illegal aliens back on our streets, because with my legislation, ‘catch and release’ will give way to ‘deter and remove.’” Tulsa County Sherriff Stanley Glanz said “this legislation addresses the frustrations I have experienced with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The problem doesn’t end with the capturing of illegal aliens, we must have some mechanism in place to detain and deport these offenders.”

Rather than the mere 20 percent of non-immigrants who currently are being processed through this system, “registering the entry and exit of all non-U.S. citizens will close off a major homeland security vulnerability. This bill holds the strong promise of bringing a halt to these practices and helping to discourage illegal entry.”

Bush:

'Automatic

Amnesty'

for Illegals

News Max

President Bush shoehorned a plug for his guest worker program between making a joke about an award winner and listening to love songs at a White House celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

Bush said that as lawmakers debate immigration policy, they need to remember that while enforcing U.S. borders is important, it is only one step in the struggle to stop illegal immigration. He pressed Congress to pass his guest worker program to legally bring in new foreign workers and give some of the country's illegal immigrants a shot at U.S. citizenship.

"We must understand that you can't kick 12 million people out of your country - that we must figure out a way to say to those that if you're lawful and if you've contributed to the United States of America, there is a way for you to eventually earn citizenship," Bush said.

"Nobody in our land wants to grant automatic amnesty. But everybody in our land understands these people must be treated with respect and dignity," he continued. "There are citizenship lines for people from our neighborhood. People ought to be given a chance to get at the back of the citizenship line and have a chance."

Latin pop singer Ana Christina closed the event in the East Room with three love songs, singing one in English and two in Spanish.

President Busy signed a bill that would allot $1.2 billion for 700 hundred miles of fencing along the U.S.-Mexican border Wednesday morning in Arizona.

The bill that came out of the Senate was at first a watered down version of a House Bill. After the Senate had their behinds handed to them by their voters, they came back and worked out a bill closer to that of the House.

The new Senate Bill was so close to the House Bill, the House said to go ahead and send the Senate version to the President to sign. They did and he did.

Ann Coulter:

Have Illegals

Build Border

Wall

NewsMax

Firebrand author Ann Coulter has an answer for illegal immigration apologists who say it's simply too expensive to build a wall across the entire U.S.-Mexican border: Hire illegal aliens already in the U.S. to help with the construction.

Asked how she would solve the illegal immigration problem, Coulter told Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly on Thursday: "I'd build a wall. In fact, I'd hire illegal immigrants to build the wall."

Coulter told O'Reilly that she also favors deporting illegal aliens wherever they turn up, noting that immigration authorities missed a perfect opportunity to get a head start on the effort with the recent wave of pro-illegal protests.

"We could have done it very easily in the last week," she explained. "You could have just sent paddy wagons to the protests."

As outrageous as Coulter's comments may seem, her views on illegal immigration are firmly in the mainstream of U.S. public opinion.
A Time magazine poll released last weekend showed 56 percent of those surveyed support building a wall along the entire 2,000 mile Mexican border. Just 40 percent opposed.

Even on the question of deporting illegal immigrants, Coulter is in the majority. Asked whether the U.S. would be better off if "all illegals" were deported, 51 percent of Americans said yes, with just 38 percent disagreeing.

The controversial conservative said the disconnect between what the American people think about illegal immigration and what Washington plans to do is unprecedented.

"I've never seen an issue where public opinion seems so strongly on one side, but because of corporate interests, the government is acting the other way," she told O'Reilly. "How about putting this to a vote?"

Israel's Fence

Provides

Example for

Mexican

Border

News Max

JERUSALEM –- America can look to Israel as a valuable test case as it contemplates construction of a fence along the Mexican border.

The Jewish state is largely achieving its goal of keeping out Palestinian suicide bombers through a sprawling complex of fences, electric sensors and concrete slabs that snake in and out of the West Bank. But building the barrier has been a gut-wrenching process, fraught with political and diplomatic hurdles, that has worsened Israel's relations with its neighbors.

To be sure, there are key differences. Most important, the Israeli structure frequently juts into territory claimed by the Palestinians. The American fence would run along a recognized border.

Yet Mexican reaction to the U.S. plan sounded strikingly similar to long-standing Palestinian complaints that the solution is cruel, humiliating and fails to address deeper problems straining relations.

Congressman

Sullivan

Votes to

Increase

Refining

Capacity

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sullivan voted in favor of H.R. 5254, the Refinery Permit Process Schedule Act. This legislation, of which he is an original sponsor, will streamline the permitting process so that additional refineries can be built and used to help meet Americans increasing demand for gasoline.

“Increasing refining capacity in the U.S. is a vital step toward meeting the increased demand for fuel.” said Sullivan. “By streamlining the process and establishing regulatory certainty, we can clear the way to build the first refinery since 1976. The more refineries that are built, the more oil we will be able to refine, which means more gasoline and diesel fuel is available to American consumers.”

By establishing regulatory certainty, oil companies can be reassured as they make long-term decisions to expand refining capacity. This legislation will establish a federal coordinator who will convene all the members of the federal, state and local government who are responsible for issuing permits to develop a facility and help them coordinate and expedite their permitting schedules, so that decisions can move as quickly as possible. In addition, the Refinery Permit Process Schedule Act eliminates the delay in the permitting process for new or expanded gasoline production facilities.

Congressman Sullivan has also emphasized the need to streamline and speed up the permitting process for gasoline, diesel and Coal-to-Liquid refineries. “New domestic refinery development has stalled. While some plants have expanded, no new ones have been built in the past 30 years and they remain dangerously clustered in the Gulf Region. Gasoline imports are rising, along with imports of other refined products. It is absolutely vital that we eliminate needless delay and uncertainty in the refinery permitting process.”

“While we are examining building new refineries, it is important to remember that locations with the infrastructure and manpower already in place to increase production already exist. Existing pipeline infrastructure, like the one located in Cushing, Oklahoma, can be expanded to full scale refineries and are fundamental to increasing our domestic refining capacity,” said Sullivan.

"The Last Day"

Garrison Scott riding a bike in China

03/30/07 Friday Shenyang from Mrs Lannert:Ni Hao,

Our last day in Shenyang has come and ended. We drove an hour outside of the city to a country school. We felt like the rich and famous. They had the students lined up on both sides, cheering as we walked down the path. The kids were really impressed. They had a banner saying that this would basically be a better welcome then the one we received in Shenyang. For a poor country school they did a great job.

Our students spent the morning playing games with the students. They jumped rope, flew kites, played hackey sack, basketball, soccer, ping pong and learned to do a rubber band jumping game. Stuart is the center of attention for the Chinese adults. He is picking up the language rapidly and can now tell a joke in Chinese. Christine and Emily were like movie stars. There were girls circled around them just wanting to talk to them.

We ate lunch at the school and our students are becoming really good eaters of Chinese food. Garrison is the coke king! He also had quite a few boys talking to him today. After lunch we toured the huge areas of greenhouses next to the school.. Some are taken care of by the students, but others are owned by the farmers. Dakota was making sure that noone stepped in the manure all over the place! Joey remarked it was the most green he had seen in his entire time in China.

We reutrned to our school and the students went to their classes for their farewells. We will look like serious pack mules when you see us get off the plane in Tulsa! They just keep giving us gifts!

After class we went to our farewell dinner at Poppi's. It was the closet thing to western food that I have had since being here. The students really enjoyed getting to be with each other. Jakob and Piccolo have become very good friends. Kelsey seemed to enjoy herself this evening, but I know that she is most anxious to get home. She has made a rather lengthy list of what she will do, with church right at the top! Tiffany can not believe the time is over and said that I could leave her by accident. I told her that Terry wouldn't care for that at all!

We will meet at the airport tomorrow morning at 9:30, 8:30 pm your time. We will see you on Saturday night when we land in Tulsa.

Until then, Zai Chian

______________

Boys on a Rope Bridge

03/29/07 Thrrsday Shenyang from Mrs Lannert: Ni Hao, Hard to believe that we only have one day left in Shenyang!

Today was colder and it snowed during the morning. Huge, fluffy flakes. The kids thought it was great. One of the Chinese boys said that he hoped it snowed so hard that we would not be able to leave! It stopped around noon with no trace left on the ground.

All the kids said that they had a great night. Kelsey said that it was much better last night for her. I don't know how we will get everything home. The students in the classes have been bringing gifts for the students!

We went to a museum that chronicled the Sept. 18 attack by Japan leading to the Puppet Regime. It was pretty impresive. There was one spot that had bones to show the massive dumping of bodies. Emily didn't want to know if they were resl, most were! The kids did not know anything about this period in history so you can bet when they study World History in 11th grade, they will remember.

From the museum we went ot lunch at a Chinese/Brazilian buffett. The kids liked having the ability to pick what they wanted to eat and thought it was also pretty neat to have them bring the meat to the table and carve it there. Tiffany, Dakota, Emily, Spencer, Garrison and Jakob all ate REALLY HOT peppers. They were the tiniest peppers you have seen but their faces sure got red! Stuart can handle the hot stuff the best. Joey feasted on numerous servings of fried rice.

After lunch the students returned to class until the afternoon when they gave their presentations to a greoup from the 7th grade, Principal Xu and Vice-superintendent Dong. They did a pretty good job but we probably needed one last practice with them before they presented to the group.

After school, Ray and I were invited to join Christine's family for dinner. We ate Bar-b-que, but not Oklahoma style. It was more like Japanese where they cook the meat at the table over two charcoal burners. Her family is very sweet and had wonderful things to say about Christine. The two girls seem to get along well.

Well, tomorrow is our very busy day. We are going to tour the countryside school and have our farewell dinner. Know that all are well, anxious to come home and have "real" food, but enjoying themselves and having the most incredible experience of a lifetime.

Unitl tomorrow, Zai Chian.

03/28/08

03/28/07 Wednesday Shenyang from Mrs Lannert: Ni Hao,

It was another beautiful day in Shenyang. Since we have been here the sky has been fairly sunny and the weather not terribly cold. Principal Li says that an old Chinese belief is that if the weather is good when you visit a place, that you have made the gods happy.

Today we were off to the World Horticultural Exhibition. It was opened in May of 2006 through October of 2006. We walked forever! I'm sure in the spring, summer and fall that it is beautiful, but it is winter here! There is not a place that we have not gone where we do not climb a mountain and a bunch of steps!

The boys were running free and racing and the girls took a much more passive view. At one point there were wooden hammocks and hammock swings. I sat in one, found out that it had wet paint, jumped out, caught my foot and proceeded to fall flat on my back. Kelsey and Emily thought that I was hurt at first until I broke out laughing. Principal Li was scared to death and now I cannot walk anywhere without her grabbing my arm and telling me to "Take care"!

After the Expo we went to lunch in a countryside resturant. The students only liked a few of the foods that we had. Principal Li has now decided to change where we will eat tomorrow. She believes they have become overwhelmed with the food so we will be eating at a more western type resturant for lunch tomorrow.

After lunch we visited Qing Fu Tomb. It was not an underground tomb. It was more of a mini palace. The kids seemed very tired and we really tried to get them to pay attention to the guide, but I think they have had enough ancient culture!

Emily had another great night. She said that the family has made her feel so comfortable. Christine continues to enjoy her home and Tiffany is doing better where she is. I'm sure the phone calls that you received today from some of the kids helped you a little also. Kelsey is still having a hard time. I took her aside and talked to her. I explained to her that she could return to Lucy's house and that Principal Li had also brought it up that if she wanted to go back, she could. She insisted that she didn't want to go so she has become my extra hug kid.

Dakota, Garrison, Jakob and Joey all seem to be doing well. Things were a little better for Stuart and he is supposed to go shopping this evening.

Tomorrow we will visit a countryside school. It is hard to believe that our two weeks are almost up. Joey said that it first it went really slow, but now it is going by too fast! I know they are all anxious to get home and I know that we will have overage because the people here have showered us with gifts!

Unitl tomorrow, Zai Chian

Jake Weis, Garrison Scott and Tiffany Yates looking on in backround

03/27/07 Tuesday Shenyang from Mrs Lannert:Ni Hao, I guess my letters are too lengthey because I keep timing out on the proxy so I'm trying the mailing through the home email.

We met the students this morning and were immediately on the bus and heading for Strange Slope. While on the bus we had the opportunity to see how the evening went for the three girls that had to switch homes. Emily already is happier. She said even though the bed was the same, the family was much better! Tiffany did alright but said it was different. Kelsey had a hard night. Her buddy is with her aunt and uncle and the uncle smokes alot. I talked to Principal Li about it and she immediately made a phone call. Hopefully tonight will be a better night for her. Since Christine is at the same home, things are still fine for her.

The boys are still enjoying there homes. Stuart, I think, is getting a little better. This evening his family called because they were taking him shopping again, he did not have any Chinese money, and they did not know where they could go to convert his American so they were going to convert it themselves and asked if that would be alright. Good thing I look at the exchange rate every morning before I leave the hotel.

We arrived at Strange Slope and it truly is strange. Your kids can explain it better, or a physics teacher, but our bus was heading uphill and put the bus in nuetral and was pulled up the hill by gravity! The kids were able to ride bikes and just thought it was the coolest thing.

After Strange Slope, the Principal stopped at some places to let the students shop. Stuart and Jakob are getting very good at saying Tai qua la (phonetic), which means too much. Dakota is our serious shopper, comparing and pricing and putting a lot of thought into his purchase. Garrison is learning to shop better also. Joey has more fun just looking at everything and watching everyone else barter!

From shopping we had lunch at a hot pot. Every single one of the students said it was the best meal they had. They were bottomless pits which brought a lot of joy to Principal Li. She was ordering extra food they were eating so much!

After lunch was a trip to Temple Fair. Another Buddahist area but also where they have a statue of every emperor of the Qing Dynasty. The kids were polite but it was evident that it was not Strange Slope to them!

We returned to school and the kids went back for the last class with their buddies. Some of them were going to present their power points to their classes in preparation for Thursday when they present in front of 200 7th grade students.

Until tomorrow, Zai Chian

Students at dinner

03/26/07 Monday Shenyang from Mrs Lannert: Ni Hao,

We were reunited with the students first thing this morning at the flag raising ceremony. They were all so excited to tell us about their weekends. All had a great time. A group of four, Jakob, Tiffany, Dakota and Joey got to spend all of Saturday together visiting another town, going to an amusement park and some shopping.

Stuart got to go shopping and play games, much to his delight! Christine went shopping and to a tea ceremony. Kelsey and Emily also got to shop. Emily almost hates to leave the family she is with now…almost! Garrison went out on Saturday but was not feeling well yesterday. He felt much better today.

We watched the morning flag ceremony and then the students went to their first class with their buddies, the girls with their new buddies. Then we went and toured a Kindergarten school. They were so cute! Dakota, Jakob, and Stuart are naturals with this age. The girls were great with them. Joey
had his pennies to hand out today. Some of the little ones tried to put them in their ears!

Lunch was back at school with some more playing in the gym after lunch, then off to the Imperial Palace. The students have now figured out that once you have seen one palace, you have pretty much seen them all! Principal Li figured out that it really was no longer interesting to the students so she
set out on a shopping trip with them. The kids enjoyed that part although brief!

We returned to school and Mr. Costa, a former assistant superintendent at Jenks, arranged for the tailor to meet us at school. Almost everyone chose to be fitted for something. The buddies had to wait until their student was ready so some did not get to leave and go home until almost 7:30!

We are off to the Strange Slope tomorrow along with some other tourist spots. Apparently when you climb uphill it is easy and going downhill is difficult!

Until then, Zai Chian!

No Picture Information

03/23/07 Fridaqy Shenyang from Mrs Lannert:Ni Hao,

Day two at school! The students were already in the conference room to greet Ray and I when we arrived. They had a good night except for Stuart. His buddy is a brain head and studied from the time that dinner was over until 12 am. Stuart was bored. Principal li assured us that his weekend would not be that boring! Dakota went to Pizza Hut for dinner last night,so now all of the students want their families to take them there to eat. The families are con-cerned that the students do not like the food and want to make sure that they eat, so we checked with them on what they liked and did not like. I gave the lists to the Principal and the buddies will tell thefamilies.

This morning we toured another school in the Shenyang district. It was the 5th- 6th Primary School. The students were very excited to see American students in their school. They took us on a tour and then we watched them at morning exercise. They allow the children to play get into their class lines for military style exercises. They were all joined them…even me!

After exercises we were split into two groups. I took the girls and Ray took the boys. The girls went to an English class and the boys went to a music class. The English class was surprising. The students were fifth graders and their English was very good. The lesson was on Chinese New Year. The teacher had the students very involved and had treats for them when they answered. Then they had us participate in some of the class. Kelsey and Christine were invited to try a festival dance with a scarf. The students thought it was great how well the girls did. I have small video clips of it! Then the students showed their New Year clothing. The teacher made all of us Chinese Knots in the shape of pigs and the students gave us art work.
One of the students insisted that Emily take her New Year dress with her. Emily tried to say no, but the girl insisted!

In the Gym in school, Shenyang

The boys had a great tour of the school. According to Ray, the young girl that led the group was very polite and spoke incredible English. In the music class, the Chinese kids sat in a horseshoe shape and were very attentive and responsive to the teacher. The teacher had a lot of energy. The computer screen was projected on a wall screen. Ray thought it was interesting how the students would stand up when called to answer. They did a little dance, some rhythmic clapping, and singing. The boys watched all of this. Then the teacher pulled out Indian hats and gave them to the boys. Stuart received a special hat…the girl hat! They had to stand up and join the students in the dance. This was where the girls and I came in and I have video of the boys dancing. One of the funny signs that we saw was “Let's fake good care of our school.”

We headed back to the Middle School for lunch. Our meal was prepared by the school and was pretty good. The students didn't eat too much but did start right into
practicing their hackey sack. They again could play ping pong and their buddies joined them. Ray gathered most of them up and put them into a game of basketball. Kelsey didn't want to play but did njoy laughing at them playing. Garrison spent his time with the heavy bag, hanging in the side of the gym. Watching some of the PE teachers kick the bag, we would bet Garrison would love to be in their classroom. The students then had to return to class with their buddies.

In uniforms attanding class

We met back up with them at the end of the day. They have a classroom meeting on Friday and today was presentations by the Chinese students. We went to Joey's room and they made him get up and give a speech. He did a really good job. I knew he was nervous, but he didn't come off as very nervous. We watched some students play traditional instruments, ance, sing, and even perform a magic card trick with Ray. They also got Joey to play musical chairs and he stayed in for two rounds!

The next room was Emily's and they asked her to get up and sing a song. She was so embarrassed, but she sang Twinkle, Twinkle in Chinese and then in English! From there we made it to Dakota, Tiffany, and Jakob's class. They were finishing up talking about being here. It was already time to go so we did not get a chance to go to the other classes.

We once again met them at the gate to say good-bye and I watched as they left. Each of our students has two police officers that follow them home. They are very protective of our children here! It is wonderful to watch our students interact with the students and with the teachers. They are not just being accepted and welcomed they are being cherished! They are celebrities. The Chinese students are thrilled to be able to be near them and to say hi. Each child has a nice story about being approached and asked to be friends and being personally welcomed.

We will not see the students again until Monday morning. Many already know the plans for the weekend. Emily is going to meet Hannah's grandfather or grandmother or both, she wasn't sure which. Joey, Tiffany, Jakob and Dakota are going together to see some other areas of China. I was wrong when I thought it was Christine's and Jakob's families were shopping together.

Probably will not send any news until we see the students Monday.
Until then,
Zai Chian!

03/22/07 Thursday Shenyang from Mrs Lannert:Ni Hao

I hope that you received the email about our arrival that I sent out this morning. After I hit send, my message box turned to Chinese so I could not verify that it went through. If not, let me know and I will retell our arrival in Shenyang.

Ray and I reunited with the students at 10 this morning. They were so excited to talk about their first night. Some with great stories about the exotic foods that they graciously ate and others with how their families were. Home-sickness has set in for a few so extra hugs were given all around.

The students spent the morning in class with their buddies and then we went out for our Wel-come lunch. We were taken to a huge greenhouse. It will probably be the only fresh air we will get on this trip! We were seated in a large room with all of the boys at one table, the adults at the middle table and the girls at the third table. The boys are adjusting just fine to each other. Stuart and Dakota have become our ambassadors of humor and high jinks! They and two of the
Chinese boys put salt into others drinks while they were gone. When they returned, someone would say, “gung bay”, or
bottoms up. Then the entire table would burst into hysterical laughter. Iguess boys will be boys!
Joey has now been given the nickname Chop Chop because, again, he almost dropped his
chopsticks on the floor. Garrison is Chucks because he and the rest cannot stop telling and
laughing about the nunchuck incident at the airport!

Kelsey Khoo, Tiffany Yates, EmilyDunn. Christine Loughlin

The girls are much quieter. I think they are very timid and not sure what to say to each other. Emily's buddy, Hannah, speaks so softly that Emily cannot hear her. She hates to keep asking her to repeat herself. I asked Principal Li to talk to Hannah about this. I also gave Emily my cell phone number if she was uncomfortable and wanted to call. Principal Li told all of the
parents to allow the students to
call us if they needed to.

After lunch we returned for a tour of the school. The buddies went to class so it was just us. They toured the music rooms and played a musical Smart board. They could touch
anywhere on the music staff and the correct note would play. They then toured the gym where the PE teacher, Dean Wong, gave some of them a computer flexibility test. They had to sit on the floor with their legs flat to
the ground, then lean over and push a slide as far as they could. The further they could go down the better. Kind of like toe touches. The boys thought they were real hot shots with their scores of 7 and 8 until Tiffany blew them away with a 15.7. That girl is tall and limber! She was much more herself today.

We went back to the playground to watch afternoon exercises (military style). Dean Wong knew how much the boys wanted to play ping pong, so he brought paddles and balls and handed to them saying, “Since you are such good kids.” The boys lit up. We headed back to the gym where they were able to play for over an hour. It was a great time and a chance forthem to get a break from their on the spot Chinese show! Dean Wong, Principal Li, Ray and I also
played with them. They got to play ping-pong, hackey sack, and even some badminton. Kelsey kept saying, “This is so
weird. I mean I see you at school and you're here, playing with us.” I guess she thought that teachers didn't play! Joey really got into the hackey sack. Principal Li asked if I was concerned because he kept diving to the ground for it, but he went down like a soccer player, so I knew he wouldn't be hurt. Jakob was taking it with his head and his chest. He didn't have his hackey sack with him at school, but we told him to bring it tomorrow.

After we left the gym we returned to the school. They uncovered the baby grand in the lobby and Christine played the piano for us. She said it was not very good because her fingers were cold, but she really has some incredible musical abilities! It was soon time to
return them to the classrooms
and head home at 5, all except Emily, who's class stays until 6. She worked on her Kumon while the class took an exam.

We met them at the outside gate to say good-bye. Earlier we had to give Principal Li copies of their passports because the families had to notify the local police that the students were staying with them. Notify them they did. There were at least 20 officers waiting for the students to escort them all the way home. They were treated like royalty. Rest assured that your children are definitely well protected!

Tomorrow we tour the elementary schools. I know the students are nervous about the upcoming weekend and not seeing each other for a few days. Christine and Jakob's
families plan on shopping together so Joey wants to see if his family can do the same.

Until tomorrow, Zai Chian

Yesterday, I met cnadidate Dan Newberry. Dan is running for State Senate in the same district as turncoat Nancy Reily. Last year, Nancy swithched parties from Republican to Democrat. In doing so, she switched the balance of the state senate causing the majority to go the way of the Democrat.

I was very impressed when I met Dan. The way that I see it, Dan is looking out for you and me, the tax payer. I wish him the best of luck.

I have one reccomendation, hold off on officially running with the Republican Party. That's Right! You never know, Nancy the "Turncoat" Reily might switch parties again.

Bush Blasts Democrats on Iraq Pullout Plan

News Max

President Bush accused congressional Democrats Wednesday of meddling in Iraq war policy and said setting a deadline for a pull-out of U.S. forces would have disastrous repercussions for both Iraq and America.

The Senate resumes debate Wednesday on a bill containing a spring 2008 timetable for bringing American troops home. Democrats insist that Bush will have to accept some sort of withdrawal deadline in exchange for the billions of dollars needed to fund the war.

"We would hope that the president understands how serious we are," Majority Leader Harry Reid said after the Senate voted to uphold a timeline proposal in a war spending bill.

But Bush said Wednesday that their move will not prompt him to negotiate. He said again that he would veto any funding legislation that includes a withdrawal timeline.

'Murdered' Russian Spy Accuses Putin

A former Russian spy who died in an apparent poisoning signed a statement on his deathbed blaming Russian President Vladimir Putin for his death, friends said Friday.

The statement, read to reporters outside the hospital where Alexander Litvinenko died late Thursday, accused the Russian leader of having "no respect for life, liberty or any civilized value."

"You have shown yourself to be unworthy of your office, to be unworthy of the trust of civilized men and women," Litvinenko said in a statement read by his friend Alex Goldfarb.

"You may succeed in silencing one man but the howl of protest from around the world will reverberate, Mr. Putin, in your ears for the rest of your life."

Goldfarb said Litvinenko had dictated the statement before he lost consciousness on Tuesday, and signed it in the presence of his wife, Marina.

Al Gore's Hypocrisy Exposed

Al Gore insists the world must embrace a "carbon-neutral lifestyle" and make necessary sacrifices to head off what he warns will be an environmental cataclysm – but in his personal life he doesn’t practice what he preaches.

"Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb," warns the Web site for his global warming documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth.” "We have just 10 years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tailspin."

Gore tells consumers how to change their lives to curb their carbon-gobbling ways: Switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs, use a clothesline, drive a hybrid, use renewable energy, dramatically cut back on consumption.

But "public records reveal that as Gore lectures Americans on excessive consumption, he and his wife Tipper live in two properties: a 10,000-square-foot, 20-room, eight-bathroom home in Nashville, and a 4,000-square-foot home in Arlington, Va. He also has a third home in Carthage, Tenn.,” Peter Schweizer, author of the book Do As I Say (Not As I Do): Profiles in Liberal Hypocrisy,” writes in USA Today.

"For someone rallying the planet to pursue a path of extreme personal sacrifice, Gore requires little from himself.”

Sullivan to Local Law Enforcement: We Must Work Together to Stop Illegal Immigration in Oklahoma

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman John Sullivan sent a letter to local law enforcement officials throughout the First District of Oklahoma asking for their support in reporting all immigration violations they encounter to United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the federal agency responsible for enforcing immigration laws in Oklahoma and within our nation’s interior. In light of the 46 recent arrests of criminal illegal aliens in Tulsa, Sullivan also praised ICE and the local law enforcement officials who assisted in the arrests.

“Recently, 46 criminal illegal aliens were arrested in Tulsa by ICE in conjunction with local law enforcement departments,” Sullivan said. “In light of these important arrests, I am writing to every law enforcement department in the First Congressional District of Oklahoma to request their support in reporting all immigration violations encountered by their officers to ICE. By doing this, they can help further build the case for a permanent ICE presence in Tulsa.”

In his letter, Sullivan recognizes the many complaints he has received from law enforcement officials when they try to report immigration violations to Oklahoma’s lone office in Oklahoma City, including time delays in responding to incidents and failure to detain illegal aliens. Several law enforcement officers have told Sullivan that they have stopped contacting ICE altogether because ICE will not respond to immigration incidents. “I understand local law enforcement’s frustrations, but we must remain vigilant in reporting these cases to ICE.”

ICE Assistant Secretary Julie Myers, in a recent meeting with Sullivan, stated that Northeastern Oklahoma has not seen a substantial increase in illegal alien reports and apprehensions by local law enforcement relative to other states experiencing high levels of illegal immigration. “I feel that the instances involving local law enforcement encounters with illegal aliens are underreported and ICE’s numbers do not accurately portray the severity of our problem.”

“Although it is the sole responsibility of the Federal Government to arrest and detain illegal aliens, I hope that local law enforcement departments will report all immigration violations to ICE,” Sullivan said. “By reporting every case, they can more accurately portray the illegal immigration problem in Eastern Oklahoma and help alleviate the strain on our communities and local law enforcement budgets while facilitating increased immigration enforcement in our area.”

Text of the letter can be found below:

To all law enforcement officials in the First District of Oklahoma:

As you know, I am actively working to secure a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) presence in Tulsa to combat illegal immigration in Eastern Oklahoma and to better secure our nation’s interior. Recently, 46 criminal illegal aliens were arrested in Tulsa by ICE in conjunction with local law enforcement departments. In light of these important arrests, I am writing you and every law enforcement department in the First Congressional District of Oklahoma to respectfully request your support in reporting all immigration violations encountered by your officers to ICE. By doing this, we help further build the case for a permanent ICE presence in Tulsa.

Our illegal immigration problem in Oklahoma is severe. According to a Pew Hispanic Center report released in March 2005, nearly 40% of Oklahoma's foreign-born population is in the United States illegally. Additionally, Oklahoma Interstate Highway I-44 and U.S. 75 are major roads through Tulsa, and serve for the smuggling of illegal aliens and illegal drugs to all areas of the United States. I know many of you have reported to me time delays and a lack of detention of illegal aliens when reporting immigration violations to our lone ICE office in Oklahoma City. Because of this, several law enforcement officers have stated to me that they stopped contacting ICE to report immigration violations they encounter. We must remain vigilant in reporting these cases to ICE.

Recently, I met with ICE Assistant Secretary Julie Myers. She informed me that our area has not seen a substantial increase in illegal alien reports and apprehensions by local law enforcement relative to other states experiencing high levels of illegal immigration. I feel that the instances involving local law enforcement encounters with illegal aliens is going underreported. The one day arrests of 46 criminal illegal aliens in Tulsa alone is an important step forward in dealing with our criminal illegal alien population and underscores the severity of our problem.

Although it is the sole responsibility of the Federal Government to arrest and detain illegal aliens, I hope your department will report all immigration violations to ICE during every incident with illegal aliens. This will bolster our case immensely for an ICE presence in Tulsa and help alleviate the strain on our communities, and your local law enforcement budgets.

If a member of your department encounters an illegal alien or group of illegal aliens during the course of their regular duty, please report all incidents to the ICE Law Enforcement Support Center at (802) 872-6060 and the Oklahoma City ICE office at (405) 605-1120. In doing so, we can more accurately portray the illegal immigration problems in Eastern Oklahoma and facilitate increased immigration enforcement in our area.

Thank you for the important work and dedication to the safety and well-being of the people of the First Congressional District of Oklahoma. I am here to help in anyway possible. Please continue to contact me anytime with your comments and concerns regarding illegal immigration. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at (202) 225-2211.

Sincerely,

John Sullivan

Member of Congress

Reagan's

'Star Wars'

Inches Closer

Christopher Holton

NewsMax

The date was Sept. 11, 2001, and then-National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice was scheduled to give a major policy speech at Johns Hopkins University detailing the Bush administration's concern over the ballistic missile threat and plans to develop a nationwide missile defense system.

For sure, such a system - first proposed by President Reagan in his landmark speech on March 23, 1983, and dubbed "Star Wars" by his critics - had become a top priority of the new Bush administration.

President Bush made his deep belief in missile defense clear during his first presidential campaign, in a speech at the National Press Club on May 23, 2000: "It is time to leave the Cold War behind. America must build effective missile defenses based on the best available options at the earliest possible date."

Perhaps the most convincing evidence of Bush's commitment to missile defense was his choice for secretary of defense, Donald Rumsfeld, whose name became almost synonymous with missile defense in 1998 when he chaired the congressionally mandated Commission to Assess the Ballistic Missile Threat to the United States.

The irony is that the war on terror that began on 9/11 took missile defense off the back pages -- at the same time it strengthened the argument that America must be prepared for rogue states with ballistic missiles.

The ballistic missile connection was not lost on Bush, who said in a White House Rose Garden speech in December 2001, "We know that the terrorists, and some of those who support them, seek the ability to deliver death and destruction to our doorstep via missile."

He added that the only way to deter such an attack would be for America to "develop effective defenses against those attacks."

Congressman

Sullivan's

Statement

on the Death

of al-Zarqawi

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Sullivan issued the following statement regarding the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in Iraq:

“Today is a great day for the people of Iraq, America and our allies in the Global War on Terror. The death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who led a brutal insurgency that included homicide bombings, kidnappings and beheadings of Americans, coalition forces and Iraqi’s alike, is an important step in winning the war against al-Qaeda and those who wish Americans harm. The world, and especially Iraq, is a safer place with this ally of Osama bin Laden gone. We know that many obstacles remain to secure Iraq and we must continue the fight against this insurgency of hate and extremism to build a safe and free Iraq. While the death of al-Zarqawi is a positive step toward a safe and secure Iraq, we must remain patient and vigilant as we continue our missions in Iraq and in the Global War on Terror. Our troops have been relentless in tracking down al-Zarqawi and other top al-Qaeda leaders. I am proud of the American troops who carried out this mission, and of all our servicemen and women serving across the globe.”

Democrats Fortify

Plan to Pull Troops

From Iraq

News Max

WASHINGTON -- Senate Democrats coalesced Monday around a proposal urging the Bush administration to start pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq by year's end, brushing aside calls by some in the party for a firm withdrawal timetable.

"Three-and-a-half years into the conflict, we should tell the Iraqis that the American security blanket is not permanent," said Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., who helped write the nonbinding resolution that quickly drew criticism from Republican leaders.

"Let me be clear: Retreat is not a solution," Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., said, chastising Democrats for espousing a "cut-and-run" strategy that "threatens our national security and poses unacceptable risks to Americans."

The Senate is to take up the resolution Tuesday and vote on it before Friday as debate on Iraq spills over into a second week on Capitol Hill, less than five months before midterm elections that will decide whether Democrats or Republicans control Congress.

Last week, the GOP-controlled Senate and House soundly rejected timetables for pulling U.S. forces out of Iraq, back-to-back votes that forced lawmakers in both parties to go on record on a major issue in re-election campaigns nationwide.

As the U.S. death toll and war spending continue to climb, polls show the public increasingly uncomfortable with the direction of the conflict, which began in spring 2003 when the United States invaded Iraq to topple dictator Saddam Hussein.

Democrats in Congress have long been divided over the way ahead in Iraq.

Iran

Hoarding

Gold

WASHINGTON -- Iranians are going for the gold - at least until someone else cuts them off.

To forestall an effort by the West to seize Iranian assets in Europe, the Iranian leadership decided last fall to begin a massive, secret repatriation of its international currency reserves, according to Central Bank of Iran documents.

The documents were obtained by an Iranian opposition group and shared with Newsmax.

The documents detail eight shipments in chartered jumbo jets from Zurich's Kloten airport. The shipments, from October through late November, brought 250 tons of gold bullion from the vaults of Swiss banks to Tehran.

The gold was purchased by Bank Markazi (the Central Bank of Iran) from Credit Suisse in Zurich, the documents showed.

Three of the eight flights attracted the attention of amateur aircraft spotters, because the planes were painted in the distinctive livery of Iran Air, which rarely flies into Zurich.

Immigration Continues to be the Number One Issue

John Sullivan with Garrison Scott

Immigration continues to be a very important issue for many Americans and for those of us in Congress. Last Wednesday, I led a press conference, along with several Members of the House and members of the newly formed organization, "You Don't Speak For Me." We discussed our concerns about the Senate's immigration reform legislation, which includes amnesty for the 12 to 20 million illegal aliens in the U.S. We emphasized the need for enforcement of our border and interior immigration laws prior to any consideration of an amnesty or guestworker program. In addition, last Friday, I met with Julie Myers, the new Assistant Secretary for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to discuss the need for an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) presence in Tulsa. I explained to Assistant Secretary Myers that an ICE presence, through the placement of an ICE Office of Investigations or ICE agents, will help reduce the delays in conducting illegal immigration apprehensions and investigations, and will help serve Oklahoma in enforcing our federal immigration laws. It is imperative that Congress pass comprehensive immigration enforcement legislation, which focuses on enforcing our border and interior immigration laws.

Congressman

Sullivan's

Reaction to

President Bush

Speech on

Immigration

Garrison Scott

Webmaster

Congressman Sullivan issued the following statement regarding President Bush’s speech on immigration:

“President Bush’s remarks tonight focused on the growing problem of border security in the United States, and he outlined his principles for immigration reform. His main focus was on strengthening our border with Mexico, which is vital to ensuring national security. I encourage those who wish to come to our country to pursue the American dream to legally do so. America is a nation built on immigrants, and those who come here through legal channels have helped shape our society."

“Many of the initiatives the President called for tonight were included in the immigration enforcement legislation that the House passed in December 2005. I have continually called for increasing the resources available to state and local law enforcement authorities. The President’s proposals also allowed for more advanced technology to be available to agents who patrol the border. In addition, I support the President’s call for troops to be deployed to the border to assist our border patrol agents with the one million illegal aliens who enter our country annually. Enforcement first must come before any other type of immigration reform legislation."

“Employers must have the tools necessary to determine whether or not they are hiring an illegal worker. President Bush’s call for a foreign worker identification card is a good step towards ensuring a legal workforce. In addition, President Bush discussed a temporary guestworker program and a path to citizenship for current illegal aliens. Regardless of how long an illegal alien has resided in our country, this principle would effectively reward citizenship to lawbreakers. As the Senate continues to debate immigration reform, I stand firm in my stance to strengthen border security and interior immigration enforcement laws first.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Sullivan voted in favor of H.R. 4954, the Security and Accountability for Every (SAFE) Port Act. This legislation will increase the security of our ports, through additional container screening systems and increased funding for security advances.

“Port security is a vital step in maintaining border security and thus national security, which is why I am a supporter of the SAFE Port Act,” said Sullivan. “It is vital that our nation’s ports be as secure as possible and that we use every resource available to screen incoming containers.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman John Sullivan met with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and a small group of Members of Congress in a roundtable discussion focusing on foreign policy issues. Their open discussion included the war in Iraq, the situation in Iran and Hamas’s impact on the Middle East, especially with Israel.

“It was an honor to meet with Secretary Rice to discuss important foreign policy issues critical to the security of our nation,” said Sullivan. “I was able to convey to Secretary Rice the importance of America’s continued support of Israel, especially in light of Hamas’s recent election to the Palestinian government.”

Congressman Sullivan has been a long time supporter of Israel’s right to exist peacefully, and recently voted in favor of S. Con. Res. 79, a resolution condemning Hamas’s control of the Palestinian government. Palestinians voted in early February to replace the longtime ruling Fatah party with the Hamas party, a Middle East terrorist organization, well-known for carrying out suicide bombings and funding terror strikes against the Israeli people.

First Female Thunderbird Pilot

The 2006 Thunderbird team won’t start training until this fall, but it already is headed for the history books. The Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron on Thursday announced the selection of Capt. Nicole Malachowski as the team’s No. 3 right wing pilot, making the 1996 Air Force Academy graduate the first female demonstration pilot in the Thunderbirds’ 52 year hist.

In fact, she’s the first female demonstration pilot on any U.S. military high performance jet team. An F-15E pilot assigned to RAF Lakenheath’s 494th Fighter Squadron, Malachowski just returned from a deployment in Southwest Asia and was on leave when she received the news. “It’s a great privilege to be given the opportunity to be a part of the Thunderbird team, an organization that represents the finest traditions of our Air Force,” the Las Vegas native said in a press release. “Women have been an integral part of the Thunderbird team for decades. The women of yesterday and today’s Air Force maintain a tradition of excellence, and it is that heritage that has given me this exciting responsibility of being the first female Thunderbird pilot.”

Immigration

By JIM MYERS World Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. John Sullivan understands Catholics and others who want to offer humanitarian aid to immigrants, but the Oklahoma Republican still believes that laws must be enforced.

A House bill designed to beef up current law, Sullivan said, would place more of a burden on those offering such assistance.

"There are going to be some responsibilities for the people who harbor illegal aliens," he said.

"I think we need to follow the laws."

Since he entered Congress in 2002, Sullivan has made immigration issues a top concern of his.

He has accused Bush administration officials of not having the will to enforce current laws against illegal immigration.

Sullivan backed the bill that the House passed in December, helping to trigger a sometimes heated and vocal debate.

That debate has focused lately on the impact that legislation would have on humanitarian aid offered to illegal immigrants. Catholic Bishop Edward J. Slattery of Tulsa said Sunday that he would risk prison before he stopped helping the poor.

Slattery also sent a statement to all 78 Catholic parishes in eastern Oklahoma.

Sullivan addressed the issue in comments preceding Slat-tery's

statement and several demonstrations in Oklahoma.

"I think the Catholic Church, which I am Catholic, looks at human beings as human beings and wants to treat them with dignity and take care of them, and I think that's wonderful," Sullivan said.

"But, I think, too, we need to make sure that we enforce laws in this country."

Sullivan said he had received feedback from Tulsans on the House bill.

"Yes, a little bit, phone calls from people saying they don't want to be considered criminals for helping someone that is in distress," he said.

"I understand that."

Still, he repeated his support for the provisions in the House bill.

"If someone is illegal and breaking the law, we don't know who they are," Sullivan said.

"We need to know everybody who is coming into our country. We need to know their background a little bit.

"They need to go through a process, and if they haven't done that, they are breaking the law."

Amid a wave of demonstrations last week in several cities, the author of the House bill, U.S. Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., put out a statement accusing critics of using bogus information about the measure to spread fear.

"I would hope everyone would embrace a good-faith effort to combat alien smuggling gangs rather than engage in fear-mongering that clergy and good Samaritans will be thrown in jail," said Sensenbrenner, the chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary.

"That's absolutely false, and beneath the level of dialogue this important issue deserves."

Sullivan took a similar stance in a statement also released last week:

"The intent of the House bill is to provide law enforcement with new tools and deterrents to fight illegal smuggling rings, not to punish humanitarian and church groups who provide aid to illegal aliens."

But, in an interview following his visit with other GOP lawmakers with President Bush at the White House, Sullivan stressed the need for stronger enforcement when he was asked whether the House bill was being misinterpreted or drawing unfair negative attention.

The immigration debate continues this week in the Senate.

Reform

Congressman Sullivan speaking to Garrison Scott

For too long, the vast majority of the public has been frustrated, watching helplessly as their federal government fails to enforce the immigration laws already on the books or to control our borders. Simply put, interior security is national security.

Congressman Sullivan proposed strengthening border security and enforcement to keep out illegal aliens. Assist with these efforts, devoting new resources and technology to securing the border. . When I visited America’s southern border in Arizona, the United States Border Patrol utilized a network of night vision cameras to catch over 20 illegal aliens one evening and stressed the need to increase the number of such technological resources. We must also end the practice of releasing illegal aliens who are caught. It is the federal government’s responsibility to, first and foremost, enforce immigration laws and to ensure that ‘catch and release’ gives way to ‘deter and remove.’

I got a long email from Kelsey--of course, she didn't answer any of the questions I had asked---but she did say that the Chinese kids would be coming to Tulsa April 23 or 28. She is going skiing tomorrow (I guess with her buddy and family)--I wonder if that is the "strange mountain slope"?

Apparently it was a rough flight from SF to China. Kelsey sat next to a man that goes back and forth many times each year; he said it was the second worst flight he had ever been on, the worst being when they sort of crash landed on the runway! She also said that she was never going to eat Chinese food again once she gets back to Tulsa...

Tuesday Beijing from Mrs Lannert: "I have tried quite a few times, in various ways to send on pictures." "The system is so slow here that it times out if I even try and send one picture." "The letter I wrote to all of you keeps timing out." "Guess I talk too much!"

Obviously, Mrs. Lannert is having problems using the internet in China. She should have better luck in Shenyang. They may have some kind of DSL.

We did send an E-mail asking about phone cards so the parents can talk to the students.
